Pediatric Dental Treatment with Nitrous Oxide(Laughing Gas)
Some children are given nitrous oxide (also known as laughing gas), to help them relax in preparation for their dental treatment. Nitrous oxide has been used in dentistry for many years as a safe and effective way to ease treatment. Nitrous oxide is a breathable gas that is nitrous mixed with oxygen when administered. Not only does it help ease anxiety, it suppresses the gag reflex. If nitrous oxide is required for your child’s dental treatment, they will begin with the opportunity to choose a nose piece that comes in several fun colors and scents. Children remain awake and aware for the duration of their appointment. Nitrous oxide does not put a child to sleep. At the end of the appointment, oxygen is inhaled for 5-10 minutes to completely flush the nitrous oxide from their system, leaving no lingering effects.
