The main difference between a general dentist and a specialist is the amount of specialized training they have received.  General dentists are the primary dental care providers for patients all ages, responsible for the diagnosis, treatment and overall planning of procedures to meet a patient’s oral health needs.

When a patient needs treatment that requires specialized knowledge or skill, such as dental implants, a general dentist may recommend a specialist. Specialists receive additional schooling and certification—sometimes five years longer than general dentists—in providing more focused oral health care.

Additional post-graduate training is required to become a dental specialist. Dental specialists include the following:

A decaying tooth may not hurt, so you could have a cavity and not even know it! Without proper diagnosis and treatment, the cavity will grow.  Small decay that may only need a small filling, if left untreated, may eventually require a large filling, root canal or even crown.
