Healthy Gums and a Healthy Heart: The Perio-Cardio Connection
Why brushing and flossing can mean more than just a healthy smile
Did you know that periodontal disease (gum disease) affects nearly 75 percent of Americans and is the leading cause of tooth loss in adults? Do you know that cardiovascular disease is the leading killer of men and women in the U.S.?
It's clear that these serious health issues impact a large percentage of Americans every day in two very different parts of the body. But new research is indicating that these two diseases may have more in common than you think. In fact, developing heart disease or gum disease can significantly increase your risk of developing the other.
The Link between Your Teeth and Heart
Periodontal disease is an infection of the tissues and bone that support the teeth. Untreated gum disease can cause teeth to become loose or fall out- or worse, lead to heart complications. Studies have found that people with periodontal disease are twice as likely to suffer from heart disease compared to those without gum disease.
Research is indicating that gum disease and heart disease are connected by inflammation- your body's intuitive reaction to fight off infection. While initial inflammation is good for your body's protection, it is a major risk factor for heart disease. Gum disease can increase chronic inflammation throughout the body, and if left untreated, can lead to life-threatening health problems.
Even more daunting, heart disease is not the only health risk associated with periodontal disease. Studies have also linked gum disease to other conditions including premature births and diabetes.
Healthy Gums for a Healthy Heart
With studies pointing to the link between cardiovascular disease and gum disease, taking care of your teeth and gums is more important than ever. Step up your daily oral hygiene, brushing and flossing daily to promote healthy gums and teeth.
Regular check ups and cleanings at Grove Dental are also important. Our general dentists can examine your gums and provide preventative care to keep your gums healthy. Should you need additional treatment, do not worry because at Grove Dental we have two in-house periodontists with advanced training in the treatment and prevention of gum disease- Dr. Michal P. Cunningham and Dr. Ken Arrieta. No more going from office to office for qualified periodontic care. You can achieve all of your dental needs from once practice- and that means healthier gums and a healthier heart.
"I constantly strive to help you improve your oral health and increase your confidence. As a team, we want to partner with you to keep your teeth and gums healthy for a lifetime." Dr. Michael Cunningham, Periodontist
