Patients voted and the results are in: Grove Dental is the 2012 recipient of the Readers’ Choice Award in the Downers Grove Reporter Newspaper.   This annual poll allows readers to vote for their favorite local businesses, services, events and organizations, and then winners are recognized in the Suburban Life Publications and at mysuburbanlife.com for their outstanding service.

Grove is honored to receive this recognition from our patients.  We value the relationships and experiences we’ve shared in this community from the time we opened our doors in Downers Grove more than 40 years ago. Since then we have expanded upon our patient-focused foundation to develop 3 additional dental locations with more than 30 dentists on staff.

Customer service is our number one priority, and our staff receives mandatory training in this area in order to ensure our patients are continually receiving caring, individualized attention. We take the time to listen to each patient with respect and compassion. We educate them about their options and customize treatment around their individual needs and goals. Many loyal patient families span multiple generations and have been coming to Grove Dental for decades.

Come see for yourself the difference that is Grove Dental. We look forward to caring for you and your family.

It’s Easter season, and that means its time for spring dresses, bunnies, Easter baskets and, you guessed it, candy! It’s virtually impossible to walk through the local grocery store without eying those tantalizing Easter candy favorites, such as jellybeans, Peeps and chocolate bunnies.

This year when stocking your Easter baskets with treats, keep in mind that sugar is a leading cause of tooth decay in both children and adults. Too much candy over an extended period of time can cause cavities and other dental problems.

Grove Dental wants to help you enjoy the Easter season while minimizing your family’s risk of tooth decay that comes with candy overload.  Here are a few tips for creating a fun, tooth-friendly Easter basket the whole family can enjoy.

  • Don’t include hard candies and suckers that linger in the mouth and promote decay by constantly exposing the teeth to sugar.
  • Leave out jellybeans and other soft, chewy candies that can dislodge sealants or fillings and are harder to remove from the tooth’s surface.
  • Pack baskets with healthy alternatives, such as fruit or sugar-free candies and gum.
  • Chocolate candies are also good choices in moderation, as chocolate melts quickly in the mouth, which minimizes the amount of time teeth are exposed to the sugar.
  • Substitute candy with games, such as coloring books or outdoor toys for the warmer weather, including bubbles and sidewalk chalk.  Throw in a fun toothbrush as a great way to promote good dental health!

You and your family can still enjoy the Easter season and keep your smiles healthy. Moderation is the key. Limit the amount of candy you and your child consume each day. Don’t graze on candy throughout the day; instead eat it in one sitting to reduce your mouth’s exposure to the harmful acids.  And if you must indulge, then brush your teeth immediately afterward.

Wishing you a healthy, happy holiday from Grove!

Grove Dental Can Help

If you're experiencing headaches, swelling and pain near the jaw joint or locking of the jaw, you may be suffering from temporomandibular joint disorder (TMD), a condition that occurs when the joint that connects your jawbone to your skull is not aligned properly. People with TMD often experience a lot of discomfort and pain, as there is a constant pressure on the jawbones, nerves and muscles.

Or maybe it is not jaw pain that is afflicting you, but it’s your snoring, rather.  You or a loved one may snore loudly through each night, leaving you restless and groggy the next day.  Snoring isn’t just a nuisance. It can also be a sign of a serious condition called sleep apnea.  Sleep apnea is caused by blockage in the airway that disrupts the natural breathing pattern. Untreated and undiagnosed, sleep apnea can lead to serious conditions such as stroke or heart disease.

Whether you’re a chronic snorer or suffering from jaw pain, let Dr. Lipskis help you.  Dr. Lynn Lipskis is a former TMD sufferer and now concentrates exclusively on treating patients with jaw pain and sleep disorders. She brings years of experience in diagnosing and treating both of these conditions and would love to talk to you about your symptoms.

"If you’re suffering from chronic pain, I invite you to visit for a consultation. Let’s discuss the many options available to eliminate TMD and sleep disorders from your life.” – Dr. Lipskis

We sat down with Dr. Norma Ericson to learn more about her decision to become a dentist, her passion for dentistry, and her interests outside of the office.

How did you decide that you wanted to become a dentist?
Dr. Ericson:  After working as a dental assistant while studying abroad in England, I realized that my true passion lied not just in fixing teeth, but putting lasting smiles on my patients’ faces. It was then that I decided to pursue a career in dentistry. After completing dental school, I came to Grove Dental and have been here ever since.

In what ways are you committed to continuing education?
Dr. Ericson: I received my Doctorate of Dental Surgery from the University of Illinois College of Dentistry. Since then I’ve continually exceeded the yearly-required amount of continuing education in order to stay abreast of the latest dental techniques and technologies.  The quality of dentistry I provide stems from my disciplined and committed approach toward education and learning. But all the schooling in the world can’t teach the personal attention I provide to each of my patients. It’s this balance of education and personalized care that keeps patients coming back year after year.

How would you describe your approach to caring for your patients’ dental health?
Dr. Ericson: During my time at Grove, I’ve learned that the key to effective dentistry is a partnership between the patient, my staff and me. Our entire staff is involved in caring for our patients and providing them with information regarding the patient’s dental care. Then, the patient makes the best choice. This involvement in decision-making helps ensure patients have all the information needed for optimal dental health.

Outside of dentistry, what are some of your favorite pastimes?
Dr. Ericson:  Outside of the office, I enjoy spending time with my family, friends and my dog. I also love the outdoors, spending time running, biking, hiking, or swimming when I find the time. More recently I took a painting class to try something new!
